に基づいて: stating the basis of a judgment or action
Distinguish decisions founded on evidence or rules from adjustments suited to a situation. Check whether a stated basis guarantees accuracy, and learn the noun-modifying form.
What was the decision based on?
調査結果に基づいて、計画を立てました。 means making a plan based on survey results. It says more than that planning happened after the survey: the findings provided its basis.
規則に基づいて判断します。 presents the rules as the standard for a judgment. Whether the rules have already been read or the judgment finalized depends on tense and additional context.
The type of basis is not a guarantee of truth
実際の出来事に基づいた物語です。 describes a story based on actual events. That basis does not establish that every line of dialogue or detail in the story is factual.
古い資料に基づいて出した結論でした。 describes a conclusion drawn from old materials. に基づいて identifies a basis; it does not automatically guarantee that the information is current or the conclusion valid.
A different relationship from に応じて
参加人数に応じて、椅子を用意します。 means adjusting the provision of chairs to participant numbers. 調査に基づいて、会場を選びました。 identifies research as the basis for choosing a venue, focusing on the foundation of a decision rather than what is adjusted.
Before a noun, に基づく is possible in 資料に基づく説明. に基づいた説明 is possible too. This identifies the materials supporting an explanation rather than simply using の to show possession between nouns.
