絶対: A Strong Prohibition and a Qualified Criterion

Compare a strong request to stay out of a dangerous place with a qualification about a record as an absolute criterion. Read the action and the status of the criterion separately.

絶対に (ぜったいに): A strong prohibition

「危険な場所には絶対に入らないでください。」 — “Never enter a dangerous area.” The request strongly prohibits entering a dangerous place. 絶対に expresses the force of that prohibition.

The strength of a prohibition is separate from whether anyone entered. The sentence reports neither entry nor success in preventing it.

絶対の基準: The status of a criterion

「この記録が絶対の基準とは限らない。」 — “This record cannot be regarded as an absolute standard.” The record cannot be regarded as an absolute criterion. 絶対の qualifies the character of the criterion.

とは限らない restricts the assertion of an absolute standard. It does not make the record always wrong or entirely useless.

Force and scope of the statement

絶対に concerns the force of a request about action; 絶対の concerns the status of a judgment criterion. They need not be converted into one numerical probability.

The example gives no detailed reason for withholding absolute status. Do not supply an invented comparison object or measurement.

What do the prohibition with 絶対に and 絶対の基準とは限らない qualify?

Show the answer and why

The first gives force to the prohibition; the second restricts treating the record as an absolute criterion. It does not establish that the record is wrong or useless.
