普遍: A Question Across Eras and a Principle Under Review

Compare a story’s universal question with examining whether a principle holds universally. Identify the description of a question and the scope being investigated.

普遍 (ふへん): A question across eras

「この物語は時代を越える普遍的な問いを扱っている。」 — “This story deals with a universal question that transcends eras.” The story deals with a universal question that transcends eras. The question is what the sentence describes as universal.

A question that transcends eras need not receive the same answer from every person in every era. Keep the character of the question separate from agreement on an answer.

Examining universal validity

「研究者はその原則が普遍的に成り立つか検討した。」 — “The researcher examined whether the principle holds universally.” The researcher examined whether the principle holds universally. Universal validity is the subject being considered.

Examining validity does not itself prove that the principle holds in every case. Do not invent the principle’s content or a region of application.

A description and the subject of review

The first sentence describes the question; the second considers the validity of a principle. Identify what 普遍 qualifies in each.

The story’s question and the researcher’s principle occur in separate examples. They do not say that the researcher tested the story’s answer or surveyed readers from every era.

What is described or examined in 普遍的な問い and 普遍的に成り立つか?

Show the answer and why

The first describes a question in a story that transcends eras; the second examines whether a principle holds universally. Examination is not a report of universal validity proved.
