床下 and 地下室: under the floor and a basement room
Compare 床下 for a cat’s location or a moisture inspection with 地下室 for stored fruit wine or machinery sounds. Distinguish underfloor space from a basement or cellar room.
The space under the floor named 床下
床下 (ゆかした) means under the floor or a crawl space. 「猫が床下に入り込んで出てこない。」 means “The cat went under the floor and will not come out.” The sentence states where the cat went and that it will not come out.
「古い家の床下を点検して湿気を調べた。」 means “We inspected the crawl space of the old house for moisture.” The inspection for moisture also concerns underfloor space. The name alone does not establish the existence of a basement room.
The underground room named 地下室
地下室 (ちかしつ) means a basement or cellar. 「古い家の地下室には果実酒が保管されていた。」 means “Fruit wine was stored in the old house's cellar.” It names the room where fruit wine was stored.
「階段を下りると地下室から機械の音が聞こえた。」 means “As I descended the stairs, I heard machinery from the basement.” 地下室から identifies the basement as the source of the machinery sound.
A positional relationship or a room name
床下 focuses on a position under the floor, while 地下室 names an underground room. Both concern lower spaces, but they do not always name the same room.
The cat entering 床下 describes its underfloor location. The storage and sound examples with 地下室 describe what the room contains or where a sound comes from.
Can the cat entering 床下 always be restated as entering a room named 地下室?
Show the answer and why
No. 床下 describes a location under the floor, while 地下室 names an underground room. Underfloor space is not automatically the same room as a basement.
