跳ぶ and 飛ぶ: shared とぶ and overlapping jump examples

Read an athlete's leap and turn-taking jumps alongside a bird's flight and a child's jump with 飛ぶ.

跳ぶ: a long leap and children's turns

跳ぶ (とぶ) means to jump or to leap. 「選手は助走をつけて遠くへ跳んだ。」 means “The athlete took a running start and jumped a long distance.” The athlete jumped a long distance after a running start, without a numerical distance.

「子どもたちは小さな溝を順番に跳ぶ。」 means “The children take turns jumping over the small ditch.” The children take turns jumping across a small ditch.

飛ぶ: a bird in flight and a child jumping

飛ぶ (とぶ) means to fly or to jump. 「青い鳥が森の向こうへ飛んでいった。」 means “A blue bird flew beyond the forest.” The blue bird flew beyond the forest; this example describes flight.

「子どもは助走をつけて小さな溝を飛んだ。」 means “The child took a running start and jumped over the small ditch.” The subject of 飛んだ is a child jumping over a small ditch after a running start.

Do not assign jumping exclusively by spelling

Both words are read とぶ, and both have ditch-jumping examples.

The child's 飛ぶ does not become flight like a bird's. Connect each action to its own subject.

Does 飛んだ in the child's ditch example mean the child flew like a bird?

Show the answer and why

No. The child jumped over the ditch after a running start. 飛ぶ also has a jumping use, so it cannot be limited to flight.
