〜として: stating a capacity or role
Use として after a noun to state the capacity, role, or function in which a person acts or a thing is used. Compare the extended forms としての and としては with expressions of becoming or perspective.
State the capacity behind an action
私は地域の代表として会議に出席しました。 means that the speaker attended the meeting in the capacity of a community representative. The noun before として identifies the role held during the action.
通訳として働いています。 says that someone works as an interpreter. The phrase alone does not establish that the person holds any particular certificate.
Describe a function and extend the phrase
この建物は災害時に避難所として使われます。 means that the building serves as an evacuation shelter during a disaster. として can describe the function of an object or place as well as a person's role.
In 研究者としての意見, としての modifies the following noun 意見, while 代表としては賛成できません highlights the speaker's capacity as a representative. The underlying role remains the reference point when another particle is added.
Separate a role from becoming or perspective
来月、田中さんは店長になります。 describes Tanaka becoming a store manager next month. Its focus differs from 店長として働きます, which presents acting in that role.
私にとってこの経験は大切です。 uses にとって to mark the speaker's perspective. It is not interchangeable with として unless a role or capacity is actually meant.
