Imagined scenes and inferences from clues
Compare imagining a future town with estimating an animal's size from footprints. Preserve the limitation of photographs alone and the refusal to conclude solely from unsupported inferences.
Picturing an unseen future
想像 includes imagination. Picturing a town one hundred years in the future does not report direct observation or a verified prediction.
(We freely imagined what the town might look like in one hundred years.) The action is freely imagining a future appearance. The pictured scene does not become an appearance already confirmed one hundred years later.
Estimating size from a footprint clue
推測 includes inference or estimation. The animal-size example identifies both the footprint shape serving as a clue and the content estimated from it.
(I estimated the animal's size from the shape of its footprints.) Size is estimated from a clue. The sentence does not additionally report direct measurement of the animal or confirmation that the estimate is correct.
Limits on picturing and drawing a conclusion
(I cannot imagine how large the place is from photographs alone.) The limitation concerns imagining the place's extent from photographs alone. It does not say the place cannot be imagined at all or that photographs never help imagination.
(We do not reach conclusions based solely on unsupported inferences.) The sentence rejects conclusions based solely on unsupported inferences. It does not define every inference as unsupported. Read imagined content alongside the actual clues and limitations of each example.
How does imagining a town one hundred years ahead with 想像 differ from estimating animal size from footprint shape with 推測?
Show the answer and why
The first freely pictures an unseen future town; the second derives an estimated size from a footprint clue. Neither the imagined future becomes observed fact nor the estimate a confirmed measurement. Preserve the separate photograph-only limitation and the restriction on concluding solely from unsupported inference.
