育つ and 育てる: growing and the care behind it
Compare the environment in which people or plants grow with the act of raising them, and distinguish birthplace from where someone grew up.
Where someone grew up
私は海の近くで育ちました。 means that the speaker grew up near the sea. With 育つ, read そだつ, で marks the environment or location of growing up.
東京で生まれて、大阪で育ちました。 says that someone was born in Tokyo and grew up in Osaka. 生まれる describes being born, while 育つ describes subsequent growth, so the two locations must remain distinct.
