修繕 and 修復: mending, repair, and restoration

Compare 修繕 for a leaking roof and an old jacket with 修復 for a mural and a broken model. Read the focus of mending or restoration while allowing the repair meanings to overlap.

Repair and mending with 修繕

修繕 (しゅうぜん) means repair or mending. 「雨漏りする屋根の修繕を職人に頼んだ。」 means “I asked a craftsperson to repair the leaking roof.” The sentence describes asking for roof repairs; making the request is separate from the repair work itself.

「祖母は古い上着を丁寧に修繕した。」 means “My grandmother carefully mended the old jacket.” 修繕 also applies to mending an old jacket, rather than only to buildings.

Restoration and repair with 修復

修復 (しゅうふく) means restoration or repair toward an earlier appearance. 「職人が古い壁画を少しずつ修復した。」 means “The craftsperson gradually restored the old mural.” The mural example describes gradual restoration.

「壊れた模型の修復に一週間かかった。」 means “It took a week to repair the broken model.” 修復 of the model can be read as restoration or repair. The sentence states the time the work took.

Overlapping ways of fixing something

The jacket example uses 修繕 for mending old clothing, while the mural example uses 修復 for restoration. Read the focus of the work together with the named object.

The examples do not make 修繕 exclusively a building term or 修復 exclusively an art term. The model example also has a repair meaning, and the name restoration alone does not guarantee perfect recovery of every part.

Show the answer and why
