基礎 and 土台: building foundations and a basis for learning

Compare 基礎 for grammar basics and a building foundation with 土台 for a house foundation and the basis of later learning. Both words have physical and abstract examples.

Grammar and buildings with 基礎

基礎 (きそ) means a foundation or basics. 「まず文法の基礎を身につけてから長文を読む。」 means “First learn the basics of grammar, then read longer texts.” The sentence presents learning grammar basics before reading longer texts.

「建物の基礎にひびがないか専門家が調べた。」 means “A specialist inspected the building's foundation for cracks.” This example describes inspecting a building foundation for cracks. 基礎 appears in both learning and physical building contexts.

A house and later learning with 土台

土台 (どだい) means a foundation or basis. 「大工は家の土台に腐りがないか調べた。」 means “The carpenter checked whether the house's foundation had rotted.” The carpenter checked the physical foundation supporting the house.

「読み書きの力が、その後の学習の土台になる。」 means “Literacy forms the basis for later learning.” Literacy is described as the basis supporting subsequent learning.

A physical foundation or an abstract basis

Both 基礎 and 土台 can refer to physical foundations and a basis for learning. The examples do not assign one exclusively to buildings and the other exclusively to learning.

文法の基礎 names the grammar basics learned first, while 学習の土台 describes abilities that support later learning. In abstract uses, follow what the basis supports.
