集団 and 群衆: a student group and a human crowd

Compare students and instructions for group movement in 集団 with applause and exit guidance in 群衆. Read the human crowd's spelling and distinguish requests from completed actions.

集団: a group and a request for moving together

集団 (しゅうだん) can describe a group of people. 「駅前を学生の集団が歩いていました。」 means “A group of students was walking near the station.” 学生の集団 identifies the people walking together. The expression alone does not specify their exact number or an organizational structure.

「集団で行動するときは、互いに声を掛け合ってください。」 means “When moving as a group, keep communicating with one another.” 集団で行動するとき gives the situation in which the request applies. The request does not report that everyone has already communicated as instructed.

群衆: people applauding and being guided to an exit

群衆 (ぐんしゅう) identifies a human crowd. 「広場に集まった群衆が拍手を送った。」 means “The crowd gathered in the plaza applauded.” Read both the gathered people and their applause, without treating the crowd's name alone as proof that everyone has identical opinions.

「警備員は群衆を安全な出口へ案内した。」 means “The guard guided the crowd to a safe exit.” The guard is the actor, the crowd receives the guidance, and the destination is a safe exit. The sentence does not additionally report that every person left or that all danger was eliminated.

Preserve the human spelling and the scope of each scene

集団 groups the students together, while 群衆 names the crowd in the plaza and exit scenes. A request about moving together is also different from the actions of a gathered crowd. Neither word alone supplies a fixed organization, a precise headcount, or proof that an instruction was followed.

群集 has the same pronunciation as 群衆 and can appear in descriptions of biological communities. The human crowd applauding in the plaza or receiving the guard's guidance is written 群衆 in these examples. Do not swap the spellings simply because they sound alike; read what the sentence is describing.
