Publication Plans, Annual Issues, and Reprints

Compare a planned first picture book, an issued dictionary, an annual report, and a poetry reprint decision with corrected errors followed by reprinting. Read the timing and stage of publication.

Next year's publication and manuscript checking

— “My older sister will publish her first picture book next year.” Publishing the first picture book is a plan for next year, rather than an already completed publication.

— “We checked the manuscript for errors before publication.” The reported action is checking the manuscript for errors before publication. Keep that preparation distinct from publication itself, without adding that every error was corrected.

A dictionary finally issued and a yearly report

刊行 (かんこう) means publication or issue. It overlaps with 出版 in publication meaning, while each sentence has its own timing. — “The dictionary prepared over many years was finally published.” The long-prepared dictionary was finally published as a past result.

— “The committee issues a research report each year.” The committee issues a research report each year. This is a yearly practice, rather than a single past issue, and the sentence supplies no exact publication date.

A reprint decision and completed reprinting

再版 (さいはん) means a reprint or new printing. — “It was decided to reprint the sold-out poetry collection.” The event is a decision to reprint the sold-out poetry collection, without stating that printing is complete.

— “We corrected errors in the first edition and reprinted it the following year.” Errors in the first edition were corrected and it was reprinted the following year. 決まった and 再版した distinguish a decision from completed reprinting. 再版 here concerns printing a book again, rather than a court proceeding.

How do the stages differ in 「売り切れた詩集の再版が決まった。」 ?

Show the answer and why

The first reports a decision to reprint a sold-out poetry collection; the second reports correcting first-edition errors and reprinting the following year. A decision does not establish completed printing, and reprinting is not described as a new first edition or a revision of the entire contents.
