進学 (しんがく) concerns continuing education or advancement to further education, while 入学 (にゅうがく) concerns admission or enrollment. Identify whether the sentence focuses on the next educational route or entering a particular school.
Further education and school entry can be connected in the same situation. Still, an intention or consultation is not completed entry, and a lifestyle change following university entry is not a required outcome for every student.
An intention and consultation about further study
「卒業後は地元の大学へ進学するつもりだ。」 — “I plan to attend a local university after graduation.” つもりだ expresses the intention to attend a local university after graduation. Preserve the intention without reporting that university attendance has already begun.
「先生に進学について相談した。」 — “I consulted my teacher about continuing my education.” The consultation with the teacher is completed. That consultation alone does not establish a finalized school choice or completed entry.

「弟は春から近くの中学校に入学する。」 — “My younger brother will enter the nearby middle school in the spring.” The younger brother's entry into the nearby middle school is future content from spring. Keep the school and timing without adding completed attendance.
「大学への入学を機に、一人暮らしを始めた。」 — “I began living on my own when I entered university.” University entry is the occasion for beginning to live independently in this example. Keep that change separate from the other examples' plans and middle-school entry.
