留学 and 進学: overseas learning and a further educational route
Compare a year of overseas language study and document preparation with a local-university intention and consultation. Distinguish the learning setting from the next educational route.
An overseas setting and a further route
Study abroad focuses on the overseas learning setting; further education focuses on the route to the next educational stage.
The activities can coincide, but need not be identical. The language-study example does not make all overseas study degree study, and the local university does not restrict all 進学 to domestic education.
A year abroad and prepared documents
— “My older sister studied abroad for a year to learn a language.” The stated purpose is learning a language, and the reported overseas study lasted a year. That duration belongs to this example, without establishing a fixed period for all study abroad or a completed degree.
— “I prepared the documents required for overseas study early.” What was prepared early was the documentation required for overseas study. Completed preparation does not report departure, attendance, or graduation.
An intention and consultation about further study
— “I plan to attend a local university after graduation.” The sentence states an intention to attend a local university after graduation. Preserve つもりだ as intention rather than reporting completed entry.
— “I consulted my teacher about continuing my education.” The reported action is consultation with a teacher about further education. It is separate from the document-preparation example and does not establish a finalized school or overseas-study choice.
What do overseas language study and 進学 to the next educational stage focus on, and must they be the same activity?
Show the answer and why
留学 focuses on an overseas learning setting and purpose, while 進学 focuses on a further educational route. They can coincide, but overseas language study is not necessarily advancement to a degree, and further education is not restricted to domestic study.
