採点 and 減点: grading, checking criteria, and deductions

Read a graded quiz, essay grading criteria, a one-point unit omission, and differing foul deductions without treating a checked criterion as completed grading.

採点 (さいてん): grading and checking criteria

「先生は放課後に小テストを採点した。」 (“The teacher graded the quiz after school.”) The teacher grades the quiz in this report. Do not supply individual marks or results that the sentence does not give.

「作文の採点基準を最初に確認した。」 (“I checked the scoring criteria for the essay first.”) The focus is checking criteria for grading an essay. Reviewing those criteria is different from having finished grading every essay.

減点 (げんてん): the reason and amount deducted

「解答の単位を書き忘れて一点減点された。」 (“I lost one point because I did not include the unit in my answer.”) The one-point deduction concerns an answer missing its unit. Read that stated reason together with the amount in this example.

「反則の内容によって減点の幅が異なる。」 (“The number of points deducted depends on the foul.”) The deduction differs with the foul. Do not transfer the other example's one point to every foul as a common penalty.

Keep criteria, grading, and deductions distinct

採点 focuses on assessing and assigning marks; 減点 focuses on subtracting points. Read a criterion being checked, grading being performed, and a reason for deduction as separate information.

Adding scored points is also different from identifying deductions. These sentences do not provide a total-score formula or a universal foul table.

Does checking essay grading criteria mean all the essays have been graded?

Show the answer and why

No. Checking the criteria does not establish completed grading. Likewise, the one-point deduction for a missing unit is not a common amount for every foul.
