再生: Playing a Recording and Ten Years of Forest Restoration Work

Compare recorded-voice playback with work toward forest regeneration. Follow pronunciation checking and ten years of effort without treating either as proof of a fully successful outcome.

Playing a recording to check pronunciation

再生 (さいせい) can mean playback of a recording. 「録音した声を再生して発音を確認した。」 — “I played back the recording of my voice to check my pronunciation.” The object played back is the recorded voice, and the English sentence states the purpose of checking pronunciation.

The Japanese 再生して is followed by 確認した, which reports checking pronunciation. The English quotation phrases that relationship as 'to check my pronunciation.' Neither wording says that every pronunciation was judged correct.

Ten years of work toward forest recovery

「住民は荒れた森の再生に十年かけて取り組んだ。」 — “Residents worked for ten years to restore the devastated forest.” With a forest as its target, 再生 means regeneration. The sentence reports residents' work toward restoring the devastated forest.

In 十年かけて取り組んだ, ten years is the time spent on the effort. That duration does not by itself state that the forest had fully recovered after ten years.

Follow the target and the action

Playback concerns a voice recording used for checking pronunciation; forest regeneration is the target of sustained restoration work. The objects 声 and 森 make these two senses of 再生 concrete.

The first example connects playback with 確認した, checking, while the second uses 取り組んだ, working on the restoration. Those actions distinguish operation of the recording from efforts toward recovery.

Does 「森の再生に十年かけて取り組んだ」 mean that the forest fully recovered in ten years?

Show the answer and why

No. It says that residents worked toward the forest's regeneration for ten years. The duration of that effort does not establish complete recovery. Its target and action also differ from playing a voice recording to check pronunciation.
