Absorbing Water and Techniques, Seeping and Spreading
Compare absorption by a cloth or artisan with penetration into soil and the spread of an idea. Read subjects, objects, media, and groups alongside completed, ongoing, and beginning actions.
Water absorbed by a cloth; techniques absorbed by an artisan
— “The dry cloth immediately absorbed the spilled water.” The cloth is the subject taking in the spilled water, and the sentence reports that it absorbed the water immediately.
— “The young artisan is quickly absorbing new techniques.” The young artisan is the subject taking in new techniques. 素早く marks speed, while 吸収している presents an ongoing activity, rather than complete mastery of every technique.
Water seeping into soil; an idea spreading among a generation
浸透 (しんとう) means penetration or spread. — “Rainwater slowly seeps into the soil.” Rainwater is slowly entering the soil, with 土の中へ identifying where it penetrates.
— “The new way of thinking began spreading among the younger generation.” The younger generation is the group among whom the idea began to spread. し始めました marks that onset, rather than completed acceptance by every generation.
Both words have material and figurative uses
The 吸収 examples concern water and techniques; the 浸透 examples concern rainwater and a new way of thinking. Instead of assigning matter exclusively to one word and ideas to the other, follow the taking-in or spreading relationship in each sentence.
The stages differ too. The cloth's absorption is a past event, the artisan's absorption and the rainwater's penetration are ongoing, and the idea's spread has begun. Read those forms together with the participants to distinguish the four examples.
What roles and stages appear in the cloth's 「吸収した」, the artisan's 「吸収している」, and the new way of thinking's 「浸透し始めました」?
Show the answer and why
The cloth took in the water, the artisan is quickly absorbing new techniques, and the new way of thinking began spreading among the younger generation. Distinguish the completed action, ongoing activity, and onset without assigning material and figurative uses exclusively to different words.
