料理 and 調理: Dishes and food preparation

Compare 料理 naming fish and seasonal-vegetable dishes with 調理 describing the preparation of ingredients. Read washing before cooking separately from the possibility of enjoying a dish.

料理 as the name of a dish

「週末は父と一緒に魚料理を作った。」 — “I cooked a fish dish with my father over the weekend.” 魚料理 names the food that was made. 作った reports making the dish with the father; it does not also report eating it.

「この店では季節の野菜を使った料理が楽しめる。」 — “This restaurant serves dishes made with seasonal vegetables.” 料理が identifies the food that can be enjoyed and is modified by the phrase about seasonal vegetables. The Japanese describes the possibility of enjoying such food, while the supplied English translation describes what the restaurant serves. Neither reports a completed meal.

The object of 調理する

「野菜を調理する前によく洗った。」 — “I washed the vegetables thoroughly before cooking them.” Washing the vegetables is the completed action. 調理する前に places it before food preparation, without saying that cooking was then completed.

「給食室では大量の食材を安全に調理している。」 — “Large quantities of ingredients are prepared safely in the cafeteria kitchen.” 大量の食材 is what is being prepared. The sentence focuses on the kitchen’s ongoing work and says 安全に without specifying a temperature or procedure.

A dish name and an activity

In these examples, 料理 names a fish or vegetable dish and 調理する describes preparing ingredients. 料理 can also refer to cooking, so the overlap remains rather than becoming an exclusive product-versus-process rule.

For 調理する前に洗った, identify both the lexical focus and the completed verb. Washing precedes preparation; a sentence about washing is not, by itself, a report that preparation has finished.

Does 「野菜を調理する前によく洗った」 say that the vegetables had already been cooked?

Show the answer and why

No. Washing the vegetables thoroughly is the completed action. 調理する前に means before preparing or cooking them; completion of the later cooking is not stated.
