から and ので: giving reasons
から and ので both connect reasons, but differ in form and tone. Avoid treating one as always rude or the other as automatically objective.
Connect a reason with から
雨が降っているから、家にいます。 means 'I am staying home because it is raining.' The clause before から gives the reason; the following clause gives the action or judgment. This differs from から marking a starting point.
With a noun or な-adjective in the plain affirmative, include だ: 休みだから and 静かだから. から can also follow polite forms, as in 休みですから.
Build a clause with ので
Non-past affirmative nouns and な-adjectives take な before ので: 休みなので and 静かなので. Verbs and い-adjectives connect as 雨が降るので and 寒いので. Compare だから with なので.
電車が遅れたので、遅刻しました。 explains being late because the train was delayed. ので is common when explaining circumstances and seeking understanding, but grammar alone cannot establish whether the stated reason is true.
Judge tone from the whole sentence
から can connect a reason more directly to the speaker's judgment, while ので can sound explanatory. Vocabulary, intonation, and relationships also affect tone, so do not memorize the two as fixed levels of politeness.
When practicing requests or refusals, make the conclusion clear instead of merely extending the reason. 都合が悪いので、今回は参加できません。 means that circumstances prevent the speaker from joining this time.
Check: When connecting the noun 休み to ので, is it 休みだので or 休みなので?
Show the answer and why
Use 休みなので. Non-past affirmative nouns and な-adjectives take な before ので. With から, the corresponding form is 休みだから.
