根: roots beneath a pot and the possible root of a misunderstanding

Read 根 as physical roots and a figurative source of misunderstanding. Compare the roots' location with the uncertainty marked by かもしれない.

Physical 根 beneath a pot

根 (ね) means root or source. 「植木鉢の底から白い根が伸びていた。」 means “White roots were growing out through the bottom of the pot.” These are physical white roots described as growing out through the pot's bottom.

植木鉢の底から gives where the roots extend from, while 伸びていた describes the past state. It does not relocate the whole pot or the entire plant to that position.

誤解の根 as a figurative source

「誤解の根は、説明不足にあるのかもしれない。」 means “The root of the misunderstanding may be a lack of explanation.” 誤解の根 names the source of a misunderstanding, rather than a literal plant root.

説明不足にあるのかもしれない presents a lack of explanation as a possible cause. The uncertainty remains; it is not a confirmed finding that this was the cause.

A physical location and a possible cause

The first sentence describes roots and their location; the second considers where a misunderstanding may originate. The shared 根 has a physical and a figurative object in these examples.

Naming a source with 根 is not the same function as presenting grounds with 根拠. Here 根 identifies the possible source of the misunderstanding, and かもしれない leaves it unconfirmed.

Is 根 in 誤解の根は、説明不足にあるのかもしれない a physical root, and is the lack of explanation confirmed as the cause?

Show the answer and why

No. 根 is a figurative source of the misunderstanding, and lack of explanation is presented as a possibility. Preserve the uncertainty in かもしれない rather than replacing it with a physical plant root or a confirmed cause.
