仲直り and 和解: reconciliation and settlement drafts
Compare making up in 仲直り and reconciliation in 和解. Distinguish a completed reconciliation from seeking an opportunity to make up or drafting a settlement proposal.
仲直り: making up versus looking for an opportunity
仲直り (なかなおり) describes making up after a disagreement. 「弟とけんかしたが、その日のうちに仲直りした。」 means “I argued with my younger brother, but we made up that same day.” 仲直りした reports that they made up, while その日のうちに places that reconciliation within the same day.
「友人と仲直りするきっかけを探している。」 means “I am looking for an opportunity to make up with my friend.” 仲直りする identifies what the opportunity is for. The ongoing action is looking for that opportunity, so the sentence does not say that the friends have already made up.
和解: reconciliation and a proposal drafted by both sides
和解 (わかい) also describes reconciliation between people who have been in conflict. 「長く争っていた兄弟がようやく和解した。」 means “The brothers who had long been at odds finally reconciled.” The long disagreement and ようやく, meaning finally, frame a reconciliation that has now occurred.
「双方は裁判所の提案を基に和解案をまとめた。」 means “The two sides drafted a settlement based on the court's proposal.” What they put together is a 和解案, a settlement proposal. Drafting that proposal does not itself establish that a final settlement was concluded or that the dispute ended completely.
Read the stage of reconciliation from the whole sentence
仲直り and 和解 overlap in their meaning of reconciliation. Making up with a younger brother that day and the brothers finally reconciling both describe restored relations. These family examples also show why 仲直り should not be confined to friends or 和解 confined to court proceedings.
The other two sentences describe different stages: seeking an opportunity and drafting a proposal. Look at what follows the reconciliation term to distinguish an achieved result from an action directed toward it. A settlement draft alone does not establish legal effects or the restoration of every relationship involved.
Does 「和解案をまとめた」 mean that both sides have already concluded a final settlement?
Show the answer and why
No. It says that the two sides drafted a settlement proposal based on the court's proposal. Preparing a 和解案 and concluding a final settlement are distinct stages.
