仲介 and 仲裁: brokerage, intervention, and stated outcomes

Compare 仲介 in lease brokerage and resumed peace talks with 仲裁 in an argument and a discussion. Identify who intervenes and distinguish requests, renewed talks, and organized views from final agreements.

仲介: requesting brokerage and restarting negotiations

仲介 (ちゅうかい) focuses on a role that connects or mediates between sides. 「不動産会社に賃貸契約の仲介を頼んだ。」 means “We asked a real estate company to broker the lease.” The completed action is asking for brokerage. The sentence does not say that the lease was already signed.

「第三国の仲介によって、和平交渉が再開された。」 means “Peace talks resumed through the mediation of a third country.” The third country's mediation helped restart the talks. 再開された states their resumption, which is a different outcome from concluding a peace agreement.

仲裁: calming an argument and organizing both sides' views

仲裁 (ちゅうさい) focuses on intervening between parties in a disagreement. 「二人の口論は友人の仲裁で収まった。」 means “A friend's intervention ended the argument.” The stated result concerns the argument. It does not establish that every conflict between the two people was resolved.

「委員長が話し合いを仲裁し、双方の意見を整理した。」 means “The chair mediated the discussion and organized both sides' views.” The chair's intervention and the organization of the views are stated. Neither a binding legal ruling nor a final agreement between the sides is added by the word 仲裁 alone.

Match the intermediary's role to the result actually stated

In the 仲介 examples, a real estate company is asked to broker a lease and a third country helps reopen peace talks. In the 仲裁 examples, a friend intervenes in an argument and a chair organizes a discussion. Identify both the intermediary and the matter in which that intermediary helps.

A request, resumed talks, an ended argument, and organized views are different outcomes. Do not turn each one into a completed contract or a resolution of every disagreement. In particular, an everyday friend's intervention should not be treated as a legally binding decision merely because 仲裁 is used.
