戻る and 戻す: returning to a place or an earlier state
Compare a person returning with putting an object back, and examine returning to an earlier screen or setting.
Return to an earlier location
忘れ物に気づいて、家に戻りました。 says that someone noticed they had forgotten something and returned home. 家に with 戻る, read もどる, gives the return point.
昼休みの後で、席に戻ります。 says that the speaker will return to their seat after the lunch break. 戻る covers returning to a previous position, not only going home.
Put back an item after use
使った道具を元の場所に戻してください。 asks someone to put used tools back in their original place. With 戻す, read もどす, を marks the tools.
本を棚に戻しました。 says that someone put a book back on a shelf. It does not establish that a borrowed book was returned to its owner.
Earlier screens and settings
前の画面に戻って、入力内容を確認してください。 asks someone to return to the previous screen and check their entries. 戻る also applies without physical movement.
音量を元に戻しました。 means that someone restored the original volume. Whether this increased or decreased it depends on the original and altered settings.
Does 本を棚に戻しました establish that a borrowed book was returned to its owner?
