工程 and 過程: work stages and a path to completion or failure

Compare a product's stages and a risk from skipping a step with a documented process and learning from failure, preserving conditions, risk, and possibility.

工程: product stages and a quality risk

工程 (こうてい) means process or work stage. 「製品が完成するまでの工程を図で示した。」 means “A diagram showed every stage in making the product.” The diagram showed the stages involved in making a product. 工程 focuses on work stages; showing a diagram alone does not establish that production has already been completed.

「作業工程を一つ省くと品質が落ちる恐れがある。」 means “Skipping one step in the process may reduce quality.” The sentence warns that skipping a step may reduce quality. 省くと gives the condition and 恐れがある gives the risk, rather than reporting an actual skipped step or an actual decline. It does not permit or recommend skipping the step.

過程: a documented path and learning from failure

過程 (かてい) means process. 「完成までの過程を写真で記録した。」 means “We documented the process leading to completion in photographs.” The process leading to completion was documented in photographs. 過程 focuses on the course the activity takes. Keep these photographs separate from the product-stage diagram rather than assigning them the same object.

「失敗に至る過程からも多くを学べる。」 means “We can learn a great deal even from the process that leads to failure.” The process leading to failure can also teach a great deal. Keep 失敗 as failure and 学べる as the possibility of learning, without converting failure into success or saying all the learning has already occurred.

Keep conditions and possibilities distinct from results

With 工程, look at the arrangement of stages in making the product. With 過程, look at the course leading to completion or failure. Both can be translated as process, so the object and explanation matter more than that shared gloss.

The risk of poorer quality and the possibility of learning from failure are distinct from realized outcomes. Preserve these meanings without adding permission to omit a stage or turning the failure into a success.

What must be preserved in a quality risk, 恐れがある, from skipping one 作業工程 and the possibility of learning, 学べる, from 失敗に至る過程?

Show the answer and why

The first is a risk under a stated condition, not permission to skip a stage or proof of an actual quality decline. The second is a possibility of learning from a process leading to failure. Failure remains failure, and completed learning is not asserted.
