進行, 進展, and 進捗: flow, development, and reported progress

Compare conducting a meeting and delayed construction with advancing talks, new evidence, and reported work status, without treating progress as full completion.

進行: conducting a meeting and checking a delay

進行 (しんこう) means progress or proceedings. means “The moderator conducted the meeting according to schedule.” The moderator conducted the meeting according to schedule. 進行 concerns directing the meeting's proceedings here, a different focus from reporting work status with 進捗.

means “We checked why construction progress was delayed.” The reason for delayed construction progress was checked. The check is a past action and the delay is its subject; checking the reason does not establish that the delay was resolved or construction completed.

進展: talks or an investigation advancing

進展 (しんてん) means progress or development. means “Major progress in the talks brought an agreement closer.” The talks made major progress and an agreement came closer. 進展 focuses on a situation advancing, while 合意が近づいた still stops short of an agreement reached.

means “The investigation advanced, and new evidence was found.” The investigation advanced, and new evidence was found. The stated finding is new evidence, not confirmation that the entire investigation is finished or its conclusion settled.

進捗: reported status and progress against a schedule

means “We report the project's progress at the weekly meeting.” The status reported at the weekly meeting is the project's progress. 進捗 focuses on how far the work has advanced; a regular report does not by itself mean that all work is complete.

means “The plan is progressing on schedule.” The plan is progressing on schedule. Compared with 進行 for proceedings and 進展 for developing situations, 進捗 here gives progress status against a schedule. Staying on schedule remains distinct from finishing everything.

What do conducting a meeting with 進行, talks advancing with 進展 toward agreement, and weekly reporting of 進捗 each focus on?

Show the answer and why

They focus on directing a meeting's proceedings, development in the talks, and reporting work status. An agreement coming closer is not an agreement reached. New evidence and on-schedule progress also do not establish full completion.
