The change called marriage
結婚, read けっこん, means marriage. 友人が去年結婚しました。 says that a friend married last year.
結婚する予定です。 states a plan to marry. Do not change it into an already married state.
The change called divorce
離婚, read りこん, means divorce. 二人は離婚しました。 says that the two people divorced.
離婚について話し合いました。 means discussing divorce. Discussion alone does not establish that divorce occurred.
The subject of a report
友人が結婚したと聞きました。 means hearing that a friend married. The friend married; distinguish that person from the listener.
結婚式に出席しました。 means attending a wedding. It does not mean the attendee was the person getting married.
Does 離婚について話し合いました mean that divorce already occurred?
