A possibility despite the negative-looking ending
確認を怠ると、事故が起きかねません。 warns that neglecting a check could cause an accident. 起きかねない expresses an unwelcome possibility, not the nonoccurrence of an accident.
Remove ます from the masu-form and add かねない, giving 起きかねない and 招きかねない. Learn the whole combination rather than interpreting ない separately.
The scope of conditions and results
その言い方は、誤解を招きかねません。 says that the wording could cause misunderstanding. It evaluates a risk rather than confirming that somebody actually misunderstood.
放っておけば、問題が大きくなりかねません。 warns that leaving a problem alone could make it grow. Do not remove that condition and claim inevitable growth regardless of any response.
Not simply the negative of かねる
お答えしかねます。 politely declines to answer. Do not use お答えしかねません as a polite affirmative meaning that an answer is possible. かねない has a separate use for an unwelcome possibility.
Risk expressions can overlap with おそれがある, but かねない is not used for every positive possibility. Distinguish the speaker's concern from a prediction of success such as 成功するかもしれない.
