Confirmed Content and Approaching the Truth
Compare reporting confirmed facts and an unexpected fact in a story with coming closer to truth through testimony. Read the information given and the process or wish involving truth.
Confirmed content and a story
— “I spoke only about confirmed facts, not rumors.” Only confirmed facts are reported in the example. The content conveyed is limited to what was confirmed.
— “An unexpected truth is revealed at the end of the story.” An unexpected fact is revealed at the end of the story. This content within a work is not a report of a real event’s entire circumstances.
An approach and a wish
— “We gathered testimony and moved closer to the truth of the incident.” Collecting testimony brought the speaker closer to the truth. Approaching truth is separate from having established the whole truth.
— “Someday I want to have the courage to tell the truth.” The speaker wishes to have the courage to tell the truth someday. The example does not report a confession or specify concealed content.
Allowing overlap between fact and truth
事実 concerns confirmed information or a fact revealed in a story here; 真実 is something approached or wished to be told. The words are not fixed as mutually exclusive information categories.
A report of confirmed facts and a process of discovering truth have different focuses. Do not make the collector of testimony the person revealing the story’s final fact by joining the separate examples.
