委託 and 委任: entrusted work and delegated procedures

Compare facility cleaning entrusted to a specialist company with contract procedures delegated to a person in charge. Read the scope of work and the representative relationship in the documents.

Cleaning work and its entrusted scope

委託 (いたく) means entrusting or outsourcing work. 「施設の清掃を専門会社に委託した。」 reports outsourcing facility cleaning to a specialist company. The entrusted content is the cleaning work.

「業務の委託範囲は契約書に明記されている。」 states that the scope of the outsourced work is specified in the contract. A stated scope does not report that all cleaning has been completed.

Contract procedures and a representative

委任 (いにん) means delegation or authorization. 「会長は契約の手続きを担当者に委任した。」 describes the chairperson delegating contract procedures to the person in charge. The procedures are delegated; signing the contract or paying money is not additionally stated.

「代理人への委任を示す書類を提出した。」 reports submitting a document showing delegation to a representative. The document presents that relationship without explaining its legal validity requirements.

The work and the delegated relationship

The 委託 examples focus on cleaning work and its scope; the 委任 examples focus on procedures and a representative relationship. Compare the entrusted content and the relationship expressed in each sentence.

A company recipient does not make 委託 the only choice, nor does an individual make 委任 the only choice. Their uses can overlap, so the recipient type alone does not decide the expression.
