補修 and 交換: repairing an existing item and replacing a part

Compare repairing an existing object with replacing something. Repair and replacement can occur within one repair task, while a planned start differs from completion.

Repair the existing object

補修, read ほしゅう, means repair or maintenance. 傷んだ橋の補修が来週から始まる。 says that repairs to the damaged bridge begin next week.

Preserve the start time of next week. The announcement does not report completed repairs and focuses on repairing the existing object.

Replace it with another part

交換, read こうかん, means exchange or replacement. 壊れた部品を新しい物に交換する。 says that the broken part is or will be replaced with a new one.

Read the change to a new part. Keep the nonpast description separate from completed replacement; replacing some parts can occur alongside repairing the existing object.

A repair result and another exchange object

母は古いコートを補修して、また着られるようにした。 says that the mother repaired the old coat so it could be worn again. Actually wearing it again is not separately reported.

友人と読み終えた本を交換した。 says that someone exchanged books they had finished reading with a friend. Read the exchanged object and partner without limiting 交換 to broken-part replacement.

Can 補修 and 交換 of parts occur together while fixing an object?

Show the answer and why

Yes. An existing object can be repaired while some parts are replaced. The two focuses need not be mutually exclusive repair methods.
