比較 and 対照: making a comparison and describing a contrast

Read comparisons of three desks and work records alongside contrasts in color and the brothers' dispositions. Distinguish a comparison performed from a contrast described, preserving the stated selection criterion.

比較 compares desks or work records

比較 (ひかく) is used for comparing subjects. 「店で三つの机を比較して、最も軽い物を選んだ。」 means “At the store, I compared three desks and chose the lightest.” Three desks were compared, and lightness was the criterion for the choice.

「前回の記録と比較すると、作業時間が短くなった。」 means “Compared with the previous record, the work took less time.” The previous record supplies the reference, and shorter work time is the difference described. Both sentences give a particular comparison or judgment.

対照 presents contrasts in color and disposition

対照 (たいしょう) can describe a contrast that makes a difference stand out. 「白い壁と黒い家具が鮮やかな対照を成している。」 means “The white walls and black furniture form a vivid contrast.” The colors of the walls and furniture form the contrast.

「兄の大胆さとは対照に、弟はとても慎重だ。」 means “In contrast to his older brother's boldness, the younger brother is very cautious.” The older brother's boldness is the reference for the younger brother's caution. The sentence does not make all their actions or their entire personalities opposite in every situation.

A criterion used and a contrast observed

The desk sentence reports comparing several objects and choosing by weight. The color sentence describes the contrast formed by white walls and black furniture. Check whether a comparison was performed or a contrasting relation is being presented.

Choosing the lightest desk is not a judgment that it is best in every respect. Do not restrict 比較 to similarities or 対照 to words with opposite meanings. Read the work-time and brother examples with their own subjects and reference points.

What does comparing three desks with 比較 show, and what does the white-and-black 対照 show?

Show the answer and why

The first is a weight comparison used to choose the lightest desk. The second is a vivid contrast between colors. A contrast need not always consist of two words with opposite meanings.
