部屋 and 居間: rooms in general and living rooms
Distinguish the broad room category from the specific living-room function.
The broad term room
部屋 (へや) means room. 「部屋を予約しました」 means booking a room; its purpose depends on context.
「弟の部屋に入りました」 means entering the younger brother's room. の identifies whose room it is.
A living room
居間 (いま) means living room. 「居間で家族と話しました」 describes talking with family in the living room.
「居間は二階にあります」 locates the living room on the second floor. Its function alone does not determine its floor.
Checking spelling and context
居間 and 今 can both be read いま, but their meanings differ. 「今、居間にいます」 means being in the living room now.
「この部屋を居間として使います」 means using this room as the living room. 部屋 names the general space, while 居間 identifies its assigned function.
Do the two occurrences of いま in 「今、居間にいます」 mean the same thing?
Show the answer and why
No. 今 is the present time, while 居間 is the living-room location.
