誤解 and 誤字: misunderstanding meaning and a character error

Compare a brief explanation’s possible misunderstanding with typos corrected before submission. Separate an error in understanding from an error in written characters.

Misunderstanding the meaning

誤解 (ごかい) means misunderstanding. 「短い説明だけでは誤解を招くかもしれない。」 says a brief explanation alone may cause a misunderstanding.

「二人は話し合って長年の誤解を解いた。」 says two people resolved a longstanding misunderstanding through discussion. Keep the first example’s possibility separate from the second example’s resolved situation.

An incorrectly written character

誤字 (ごじ) means a typo or incorrect character. 「提出前に文章の誤字を三つ直した。」 says three typos were corrected in the text before submission.

「誤字があると名前を正しく検索できない。」 supplies a condition in which a character error prevents an accurate name search. The issue here is the written form used for the search.

Separating meaning and written form

A typo can contribute to a misunderstanding, but the problems are not identical. Correct characters do not guarantee correct interpretation, and a reader may understand a word despite a typo.

Correcting three typos establishes those corrections. It does not establish full understanding of the text or an already completed submission.

What do the two people resolve in 「二人は話し合って長年の誤解を解いた。」?

Show the answer and why

A longstanding misunderstanding. They resolve mistaken understanding of meaning or circumstances through discussion; the sentence does not describe correcting written characters.
