添削 and 校正: feedback on writing and proofreading a document

Compare a teacher’s composition feedback with manuscript proofreading before printing. Read edited-text comparisons, typo lists, and actual corrections as different information.

Receiving revisions and feedback

添削 (てんさく) concerns correcting and giving feedback on writing. 「先生に作文を添削してもらった。」 says the teacher corrected the composition and gave feedback.

「添削後の文章を元の文と読み比べる。」 describes comparing the edited text with the original. The wording or structure can be examined, but particular changes are not listed in this sentence.

Checking a manuscript for errors

校正 (こうせい) means proofreading or correction of a document. 「印刷前に原稿を二人で校正した。」 says two people proofread the manuscript before printing.

「校正で見つかった誤字を一覧にした。」 says a list was made of typos found during proofreading. A list of findings is different information from the results of correcting each item.

Typical purposes and overlapping scope

Read 添削 with a focus on improving writing through feedback, and 校正 with a focus on finding and correcting document errors. Do not restrict them to content only and typos only, respectively.

Proofreading before printing does not establish that printing is complete. A typo list neither proves that every listed error was corrected nor that none was corrected.
