学習 and 勉強: study by people and learning by a device

Compare recorded study time and a device learning user operations with studying before a test and practicing characters every morning. Identify the learner, activity, and proposed settings.

Who learns or studies?

学習 (がくしゅう) means learning or study, and 勉強 (べんきょう) means study in the supplied material. Recording a person's study time and studying before a test show contexts in which the words describe related activities.

In the device example, the learner is a device and the input is user operations. Identifying that subject prevents a school-only reading of 学習. The example does not mean every use of 学習 must involve a device.

Recorded time and a learning device

「毎日の学習時間を手帳に記録している。」 — “I record my study time in a notebook every day.” The ongoing action is recording study time each day. A record of time does not, by itself, evaluate how effective that study was.

「この機器は利用者の操作を学習し、好みの設定を提案する。」 — “This device learns how users operate it and suggests preferred settings.” The device learns how users operate it and proposes preferred settings. 提案する describes a proposal, with no report that the settings were automatically applied.

Study before a test and a daily habit

「試験の前に図書館で勉強した。」 — “I studied at the library before the test.” The studying at a library before a test is reported as a completed action. Before the test describes this occasion; it does not restrict all 勉強 to that time.

「弟は毎朝三十分ずつ漢字を勉強する。」 — “My younger brother studies Japanese characters for thirty minutes every morning.” Thirty minutes of character study every morning is a stated habit. Keep it separate from the other example's person and occasion, and notice that 勉強 can describe regular study as well.

Who learns what in the device example, and what does the device propose?

Show the answer and why

The device learns how users operate it and proposes preferred settings. The sentence does not report automatic application of those settings. Its learning subject differs from the people who 勉強 before a test or every morning.
