勉強 and 学問: concrete study and scholarly pursuit

Compare library study before a test and daily character study with a lifelong attempt to study history and a questioning attitude. Read activity, field, and evidence without assuming completed mastery.

Study activity and scholarly attitude

勉強 (べんきょう) describes study, while 学問 (がくもん) can mean scholarship or study. The examples compare concrete studying with history as a field someone attempted to pursue in depth.

These activities can overlap. Concrete study is not defined by an absence of questions or evidence, and a long scholarly effort does not alone establish mastery. Read what each sentence actually reports.

Studying at a library and each morning

「試験の前に図書館で勉強した。」 — “I studied at the library before the test.” The place is a library and the occasion is before a test. The sentence reports studying then, without naming a scholarly conclusion or a particular research field.

「弟は毎朝三十分ずつ漢字を勉強する。」 — “My younger brother studies Japanese characters for thirty minutes every morning.” The example states a habit of studying characters for thirty minutes every morning. Its subject and schedule are specific to that example rather than a required timetable for all study.

A lifelong attempt and continued questions

「彼は生涯を通じて、歴史という学問を究めようとした。」 — “He devoted his life to studying history in depth.” The supplied translation describes lifelong dedication. Japanese 究めようとした identifies an attempt to study history in depth, so the long duration does not establish successful or complete mastery.

「学問には、疑問を持ち続けて根拠を確かめる姿勢が大切だ。」 — “In scholarship, it is important to keep asking questions and checking the evidence.” The sentence describes the importance of continued questions and checking evidence. It states an attitude, rather than a completed research result or a universal procedure for every scholarly field.

How do the lifelong attempt expressed by 究めようとした and the questioning attitude differ in focus from the concrete 勉強 examples?

Show the answer and why

The 勉強 examples focus on a reported study activity or habit. The 学問 examples focus on history as a field and on an attitude toward questions and evidence. A lifelong attempt still does not establish completed mastery.
