概念 and 定義: A Concept to Explain and a Meaning to Define
Compare a difficult concept explained through a familiar example with checking definitions before discussion. Also read thinking about time in a story and a teacher’s statement about defining happiness.
概念 (がいねん): A thought to explain or represent
「先生は難しい概念を身近な例で説明した。」 — “The teacher explained the difficult concept with a familiar example.” A familiar example is used to explain a difficult concept. The example is familiar; the concept itself is not described as easy or familiar.
「時間という概念を物語の中でどう表すか考えた。」 — “I considered how to represent the concept of time in the story.” The speaker considered how to represent the concept of time in a story. This does not report a finished work or an implemented representation.
定義 (ていぎ): Stating what a word means
「議論の前に重要な言葉の定義を確認した。」 — “We confirmed definitions of important words before the discussion.” Definitions of important words were checked before discussion. The action concerns the meanings of words to be used.
「先生は幸福を一つの言葉で定義できないと言った。」 — “The teacher said happiness cannot be defined in a single phrase.” The teacher said happiness cannot be defined in a single phrase. The statement does not make every concept impossible to define.
The subject of explanation and the scope of definition
概念 names an idea to explain or represent; 定義 focuses on how a meaning is stated. Understanding a concept and checking a definition can occur together.
Thinking about time and the statement about happiness are separate examples. Do not combine them into a work representing happiness through time or require every definition to consist of one phrase.
What is considered in explaining a 概念 and checking a word’s 定義?
Show the answer and why
The first concerns the concept to understand; the second concerns how the word’s meaning is defined. A definition need not always be expressible in one phrase.
