Word Meaning and the Value of an Action
Read a word’s dictionary meaning and the meaning of failure alongside the significance of preservation and of taking on a challenge. Preserve overlap between meaning and value.
A word and an experience
— “I checked the meaning of this word in a dictionary.” The meaning of a word was checked in a dictionary. Here 意味 concerns the content conveyed by that word.
— “Even failure has meaning when it helps us move forward.” Failure is also described as having meaning for moving forward. This shows that 意味 is not limited to dictionary definitions.
Preservation and a challenge
— “We discussed the significance of preserving the old building.” The significance of preserving the old building was discussed. The value of preservation is the subject; a preservation decision or completed work is not added.
— “There is value not only in the result but also in the act of trying itself.” The significance of the challenge itself is expressed. Keep that value separate from whether the challenge succeeded.
Where meaning and value overlap
A word’s 意味 focuses on its content, whereas preservation’s 意義 focuses on an action’s value. The 意味 of failure can also concern value, so the terms are not mutually exclusive.
Significance in taking on a challenge does not mean that value requires success. Preservation and the challenge are also separate examples, not results of the same project.
What do a word’s 意味 and the 意義 of preserving a building focus on?
Show the answer and why
The content conveyed by the word and the value of preserving the building. Uses such as the 意味 of failure can also concern value, so their ranges are not wholly separate.
