がち and 気味: recurring tendencies and mild conditions

Distinguish がち for something liable to happen repeatedly from 気味 for a mild condition. Explore verb and noun connections and the scope supplied by context.

がち describes a recurring tendency

忙しいと、朝食を抜きがちです。 means that the speaker tends to skip breakfast when busy. The masu-stem plus がち presents a recurring tendency rather than a single missed meal.

It also combines with nouns, as in 留守がちです。, meaning that someone is often away from home. It commonly describes an unwelcome tendency, but does not mean it happens invariably or that the person is never home.

気味 describes a mild state

最近、疲れ気味です。 means that the speaker has been feeling somewhat tired lately. 気味 follows the masu-stem 疲れ, focusing on the degree of the current condition rather than the number of repetitions.

風邪気味なので、今日は早く休みます。 means that the speaker has signs of a cold and will rest early today. Attached to the noun 風邪, it describes mild symptoms rather than establishing a confirmed diagnosis.

Do not replace one mechanically with the other

電車が遅れがちです。 can describe trains tending to run late. 今日の作業は遅れ気味です。 describes today's work as somewhat behind schedule, focusing on its progress rather than a count of delays.

Learn noun-modifying forms such as 留守がちな人 and 疲れ気味の人. Neither expression attaches freely to every verb or noun: remember natural combinations such as 忘れがち and 風邪気味 together with their contexts.

Quick check: Does 最近、運動不足気味です。 tell you exactly how many times a lack of exercise occurred?

Show the answer and why

No. It describes being somewhat short of exercise lately. 気味 presents a mild state here; it does not count occurrences.
