煙突 and 排気: chimneys, exhaust systems, and vehicle exhaust
Read 煙突 as a named structure and 排気 in an exhaust system or vehicle exhaust. Identify the source of smoke, the equipment inspected, and the purpose of closing a window.
煙突: the emitting or cleaned structure
煙突, read えんとつ, names a chimney or smokestack. 「工場の高い煙突から白い煙が出ている。」 says white smoke is coming from the factory's tall smokestack. 高い describes the stack; 白い describes the smoke.
「冬が来る前に暖炉の煙突を掃除した。」 says the fireplace chimney was cleaned before winter arrived. 煙突 names the structure cleaned, and 冬が来る前に gives the timing.
排気: an exhaust system or vehicle exhaust
排気, read はいき, refers to exhaust. 「作業場の排気設備を点検した。」 says the workshop's exhaust system was inspected. 排気設備 names the equipment inspected.
「車の排気が室内に入らないよう窓を閉めた。」 says the window was closed to keep vehicle exhaust from entering the room. 車の排気 names what was meant to be kept out; 窓を閉めた reports the action taken.
Identify the structure, equipment, or exhaust
煙突 names the chimney structure. 排気設備 names exhaust equipment, while 車の排気 names exhaust from a vehicle. The related subject matter does not make these the same object.
White smoke alone does not identify its substance. Inspecting exhaust equipment does not by itself confirm normal operation or compliance with an emissions standard. In the window example, read the purpose concerning vehicle exhaust rather than a report of completed exhaust treatment.
What does 排気 combine with in 作業場の排気設備 and 車の排気, and how do these differ from 煙突?
Show the answer and why
The first expression names the workshop's exhaust system, and the second names vehicle exhaust. 煙突 names the chimney structure. Inspection and the description of smoke should not be expanded into completed treatment or identification of a substance.
