Effort and ingenuity in a method
Compare daily or continuing effort with ingenuity in arranging furniture and the design of an easy-to-open box. Read the activity receiving effort and the method being devised.
Gradual results and continuing effort
states that daily effort gradually appeared in the results; 少しずつ preserves that gradual development.
describes continuing to make an effort toward a goal. The ongoing effort does not itself state that the goal has already been achieved.
A devised arrangement and a design feature
工夫 concerns ingenuity or devising a useful solution. describes devising a furniture arrangement to use the small room more spaciously. It does not describe increasing the room’s physical floor area.
says the box has a design that makes it easy to open with one hand. Read both the act of devising a method and the ingenuity embodied in an object.
The effort invested and the method devised
努力 emphasizes effort devoted to an activity, while 工夫 emphasizes an idea about a method or design. Both can be present in the same activity.
The furniture sentence concerns devising a useful arrangement, rather than merely identifying a location. The amount of effort does not establish a particular idea, and ingenuity does not establish an absence of effort.
What do 工夫 in devising a furniture arrangement and 努力 in continuing toward a goal each emphasize?
Show the answer and why
工夫 emphasizes the method devised to make the space useful. 努力 emphasizes the effort devoted to pursuing the goal. Ingenuity and effort can both contribute to the same activity.
