Preserving tradition and passing it down
Compare preserving tradition while adopting technology with a surviving tradition written down and a technique transmitted across generations.
A tradition retained and preserved
means “The village retains a tradition of lion dancing in spring.” Spring lion dancing identifies the tradition retained by this village.
means “We preserve tradition while embracing new technology.” ながら keeps adopting technology and preserving tradition together. Adopting new technology is not presented as discarding tradition.
Tradition as content and transmission of a technique
伝承(でんしょう) can mean transmission or tradition. means “I wrote down an old tradition that has survived in the village.” The example concerns an old surviving tradition written down.
means “This technique has been passed down from parent to child for generations.” The technique is the transmitted target, and 親から子へ identifies the parent-to-child direction. The passive form describes transmission over generations.
Preservation, content, and transmission
Preserving 伝統 focuses on maintaining an established practice. Writing down a 伝承 focuses on its surviving content; 伝承されてきた focuses on a technique’s transmission.
A retained lion-dance tradition, a written account, and a technique passed down are distinct subjects and actions. They do not all report festival participation or completion of technical training.
