電車 and 列車: electric trains and the broader train category

Separate a propulsion distinction from the names used in ordinary announcements.

An electrically powered train

電車 (でんしゃ) refers to electrically powered railway vehicles. 「電車で学校へ行きます」 means going to school by train.

「電車に乗りました」 means boarding the train. に marks what is boarded, not the destination itself.

The broader train term

列車 (れっしゃ) refers to a train operating on a railway. 「次の列車を待っています」 means waiting for the next train.

列車 alone does not specify propulsion. An electric train can also be called 列車, so the categories are not exclusive.

What an announcement identifies

「この列車は次の駅に止まります」 says this train stops at the next station. It does not say it stops at every station.

「電車を降りてから電話しました」 places the phone call after getting off the train. Preserve the order.

Must a 列車 use a power source other than electricity?

Show the answer and why

No. 列車 is a broader term and can include electric trains.
