地下鉄 and 新幹線: choosing a transport mode

Connect subway and Shinkansen names with the part of a journey being described.

Using the subway

地下鉄 (ちかてつ) means subway. 「地下鉄で中心部へ行きます」 means going to the city center by subway.

「地下鉄の入口を探しています」 means looking for the subway entrance. It does not report already boarding.

Using the Shinkansen

新幹線 (しんかんせん) is Japan's high-speed Shinkansen railway. 「新幹線の切符を買いました」 means buying a Shinkansen ticket.

「新幹線で移動する予定です」 gives a plan to travel by Shinkansen. Distinguish a plan from actual boarding.

Different journey segments

「地下鉄で駅へ行き、そこから新幹線に乗りました」 says the speaker reached a station by subway and boarded the Shinkansen there. Check the order of the two modes.

「新幹線ではなく、地下鉄を使います」 chooses the subway for this trip. It is not a general rule that the modes are interchangeable for every destination.

Does 「新幹線の切符を買いました」 establish that the speaker has boarded?

Show the answer and why

No. Only ticket purchase is complete; boarding is separate.
