調子 and 状態: varied conditions and restoration before inspection
Compare machine and body condition with an unscratched package and restoration to a safe state before inspection begins.
調子: machine operation and feeling well again
調子 (ちょうし) means condition. 「今日は機械の調子が良く、作業が順調に進んだ。」 means “The machine is in good condition today, so the work went smoothly.” The machine is in good condition today, and the reported work went smoothly.
「風邪が治り、ようやく体の調子が戻った。」 means “My cold improved, and I finally felt well again.” The cold improved and the speaker finally felt well again; treatment details are absent.
状態: an unscratched package and restoration before inspection
状態 (じょうたい) means condition or state. 「届いた荷物は傷のない良い状態だった。」 means “The package arrived in good condition without a scratch.” The delivered package was in good condition without a scratch, rather than a statement about packaging material alone.
「機械を安全な状態に戻してから点検を始めた。」 means “We returned the machine to a safe state before beginning the inspection.” 戻してから places restoration to a safe state before the inspection's start.
Separate restoration, inspection's start, and completion
Both 調子 and 状態 appear with a machine, so these examples do not divide them into person-only and object-only words.
Restoration came first, followed by the start of inspection. Neither completed inspection nor guaranteed future operation is reported.
Does restoring a safe 状態 before starting inspection mean safety was restored after inspection ended?
Show the answer and why
No. Restoration precedes the start of inspection. Its start does not establish completion or guarantee all later operation.
