自転車 and 自動車: two similar-sounding vehicle names
Distinguish bicycle and car spellings and readings, and means from action targets.
A bicycle
自転車 (じてんしゃ) means bicycle. 「自転車で駅へ行きました」 says the speaker went to the station by bicycle.
「自転車を押して歩きました」 means walking while pushing a bicycle. A bicycle's presence does not establish riding it.
A motor vehicle
自動車 (じどうしゃ) means car or motor vehicle. 「自動車を運転しました」 says the speaker drove a car.
「自動車に乗せてもらいました」 means receiving a ride in a car. It does not make the speaker the driver.
Separating sound and action
Distinguish てん in 自転車 from どう in 自動車. The similar spellings name different vehicles.
「自転車はありますが、自動車はありません」 says there is a bicycle but no car. It does not exclude all vehicles.
Does 「自転車を押して歩きました」 mean riding the bicycle?
Show the answer and why
