部署 and 部門: a department and a classification category
Compare departments where people work with categories used for film awards and sales reporting. Preserve the different perspectives without fixing their size or hierarchy.
Departments for work and cooperation
部署 (ぶしょ) means a department. 「来月から別の部署で働くことになった。」 states that work in another department has been arranged for next month. Read the organizational unit and its starting time.
「三つの部署が協力して展示を準備した。」 says three departments cooperated to prepare an exhibition. The departments are the cooperating actors; equal workloads are not stated.
Categories for awards and reporting
部門 (ぶもん) can identify a division or category. 「この作品は短編映画部門で賞を受けた。」 places the award in the short-film category, rather than in an employee's workplace department.
「売上を商品部門ごとに集計した。」 describes totaling sales by product division. 商品部門ごとに supplies the classification for the totals, without giving the amount in each division.
What the unit divides
部署 emphasizes the organizational unit where people work or cooperate. These 部門 examples classify awards or sales information. The words can also overlap when identifying units within an organization.
The short-film category and the cooperating departments describe different relationships. Do not assume 部門 must be larger than 部署 or turn the award category into a physical workplace.
Does 部門 in 短編映画部門 identify the department of the company that made the film?
Show the answer and why
No. It identifies the short-film category in which the work received an award. Distinguish that classification from a 部署 where employees work or cooperate.
