文学, 作品, and 創作: literature, works, and creative activity
Distinguish studying 文学, displaying or completing a 作品, and undertaking 創作 through literature, ceramics, and story examples.
文学: a field of study and an entry into literature
means “I study modern literature at university.” 近代文学について学ぶ describes studying modern literature, with the university as the setting for that study.
means “The scenery from his travels led him into the world of literature.” The scenery from the trip is what led him into 文学の世界, the world of literature. This is an entry into an interest or field, rather than a journey to a physical place named literature.
作品: displayed work and a completed ceramic piece
means “The students' work is displayed in the hallway.” 作品(さくひん) means a work or artwork. The students’ work is on display in the hallway; the sentence does not assign its creation to a viewer.
means “I spent six months completing the ceramic piece.” 陶芸作品 identifies the ceramic piece as the resulting work. 半年かけて gives the six months spent completing this piece, without setting a production time for every artwork.
創作: working on a story and creating a play
means “I devoted the weekend to writing a short story.” 創作(そうさく) means creative work or creation. 創作に取り組んだ describes undertaking the story-writing activity over the weekend; it does not by itself establish that the story was finished.
means “We created a play based on an old legend.” 古い伝説をもとに makes the old legend the basis for the newly created play. The object here is a play, distinct from literature as a field of study or the completed ceramic work.
Which word names an activity in 短い物語の創作に取り組んだ, and which names a resulting work in 陶芸作品を完成させました?
Show the answer and why
創作 names the creative activity of writing the story, while 作品 names the ceramic piece that was completed. Undertaking 創作 does not alone prove that the story was finished, and the ceramic piece is not identified as a literary work.
