随筆 and 評論: personal essays and criticism of a work

Compare a 随筆 about travel experiences with 評論 discussing a film and its historical background, including the order of reading and watching.

随筆: an experience in an essay and a grandfather’s writing

means “I wrote a short essay about something that happened during my trip.” The writer put an event from the trip into a short piece of writing; the subject here is that experience, rather than criticism of a work’s historical background.

means “I read an essay my grandfather wrote when he was young.” 若い頃に書いた describes when the grandfather wrote the essay. The grandfather is its author, while the speaker is the person who read it.

評論: a review before a film and discussion of its background

means “I watched the film after reading a review in a magazine.” 評論(ひょうろん) means criticism or a review. 読んでから作品を見た gives two past actions in order: the speaker read the magazine review and then watched the film.

means “Her criticism carefully discusses even the work's historical background.” 作品の時代背景まで extends the discussion even to the work’s historical background. 丁寧に論じている describes careful discussion; reducing it to a plot summary would lose that scope.

Following the author, reader, and viewer

In 祖父が若い頃に書いた随筆, the author and the reader have different roles. The travel event supplies an essay’s material, the grandfather’s youth supplies the writing time in another example, and 読んだ supplies the reader’s action.

Reading a 映画評論 and watching the film remain separate actions, linked in order by 読んでから. The other criticism example shows the breadth of a discussion reaching the historical background, rather than another stage in the same viewing sequence.

What actions occurred, and in what order, in

Show the answer and why

The speaker read the film review in the magazine and then watched the film. Both are completed past actions in that order; the sentence does not leave the viewing unfinished or place the review after the viewing.
