ば〜ほど: change in proportion to another degree
Repeat an action or quality with ば and ほど to express a proportional relationship. Form the pattern correctly and read whether the result rises or falls from the following clause.
Repeat a verb to build the relationship
この小説は読めば読むほど、登場人物が身近に感じられます。 means that the characters feel more familiar the more you read the novel. Put the first verb in its ば-form and repeat it in the dictionary form before ほど.
同じ道でも歩けば歩くほど、新しい店に気づきます。 relates more experience walking the same road to noticing more shops. The pattern says more than simply reporting that an action happened repeatedly.
Apply the pattern to する and adjectives
練習すればするほど、指の動きが滑らかになります。 uses すれば and する as the two forms of する. Begin with the basic pattern in which both sides identify the same activity or quality.
荷物は軽ければ軽いほど、持ち運びが楽です。 shows the i-adjective form 軽ければ軽いほど, while a na-adjective can form 簡単なら簡単なほど. 簡単であればあるほど is also used, especially in more formal phrasing.
Do not assume that the result always increases
考えれば考えるほど、答えが分からなくなりました。 says that the answer became less clear the more the speaker thought. The following result can improve or worsen.
値段は安ければ安いほどよいとは限りません。 limits the generalization that cheaper is always better. Even when ば〜ほど presents a tendency, context can deny that it is a rule without exceptions.
